Pippo D'Ambrosio " A Peaceful Place" Jazz Convention Magazine by Fabio Ciminiera

A layered project entrusted to a broad and modulated formation in a different way according to the songs. "A peaceful place" represents the convergence point of different expressive paths faced by Pippo D'Ambrosio over the years. On the one hand, the songs are characterized by a marked rhythmic propulsion, built by the drummer with elements taken from r'n'b, soul, funk and with the addition, measured and natural, of Mediterranean elements and nearby suggestions. to world music. A variegated blend, useful for dialoguing with the numerous musicians involved by D'Ambrosio in the project: and, also in this direction, the drummer brings together the threads followed during his career through the collaborations started over the years. In "A peaceful place", the groove joins the melodic approach, certainly highlighted by the presence of the voices and actually developed in the entire sound spectrum designed by the drummer. An attitude that takes into account current solutions such as, for example, the melting pot proposed by the new British jazz scene or the seminal experience traced by David Bowie in Blackstar: D'Ambrosio's compositions always seek the encounter between songwriting and rhythm, both in the management of the themes and in the improvisations, both in the solos and in the moments conducted collectively. On the other hand, the songs present in "A peaceful place" are animated by the spiritual and philosophical research of Pippo D'Ambrosio and, in particular, as the title of the disc reveals, by his reflections on peace. The verses of the Sufi poets Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, Farid Ad-Din Attar and Jalal al Din Rumi constitute the starting point of the meditations on the fundamental importance of peace both as a universal dimension and as an interior condition. Purity, love, spirituality, wisdom, introspection, emotional tension towards the deepest roots are some concepts that inspire the lyrics of the songs and which, as the drummer himself reveals in the liner notes, inspire his work and his way of being. The thirteen tracks of the disc are then organized as an overall story: the presence of the narrator and the "scenographic" artifice of the noise of the keys of a typewriter highlight the desire to expose the listener to considerations and thoughts arising as they emerge from the reasoning. In this way, "A peaceful place" takes on the character of a concept album in effect and underlines, once again, the intention to find unity and synthesis from the many elements it contains. A musical synthesis, therefore, between different influences, a synthesis between sounds, expressive codes and rhythmic solutions that naturally reflects the path crossed by Pippo D'Ambrosio in his various musical experiences, both as a leader and as a sideman.
