Musica News: Bastian Menz Trio "Everything In Between" di Amedeo Furfaro

Everything in Between by the Bastian Menz Trio is an album recorded live in Germany and released by A.Ma Records, marking its first, more than successful, venture into the genre. This refers not only to the technical/sonic aspect but also to the qualitative aspect of the trio work by the acclaimed composer-drummer residing in Hamburg. A highly respected artist, he boasts special collaborations (Nils Landgren, Charles Porter, etc.) and who in the combo benefits from the collaboration of the American Reuben Rogers on double bass and the German saxophonist (tenor and soprano) Konstantin Herleinsberger. The tracklist includes nine songs by the leader, in addition to Mandel's "Emily," denoted by the "in between" in the title, in which "everything" finds itself in a middle ground, a sort of interregnum, a limbo between stylistic inflows. Menz's drums have the usual propulsive role, but at the same time they serve a metric function of containment in the various moments when the rhythm section seems to wander off to provide more openings for the elegant eloquence of the sax. They are his "thinking" drumsticks that then innervate, when necessary, but without obscuring the magnetic patina that envelops the music.
